The Inner Workings
Dental insurance works much the same as health insurance. You pay a premium every month or year, which gains you access to a Jacksonville dentist for benefits such as checkups, cleanings, x-rays and other services. After you have a procedure, the dental office will file a claim to the insurance company to pay for part or all the cost. The remainder, if any, is sent to you for payment.
Types of Insurance
There are several types of dental insurance plans. The following are the most popular:
1. Dental Health Management Organization (DHMO)
This is a prepaid dental plan that only works with network providers. The dentist in Jacksonville agrees to accept a lower fee schedule to help you with the cost of premiums. You have no deductible or annual maximum; however, you may pay a fixed co-pay for some dental procedures.
2. PPO Dental Plan
You can receive services from any dentist in Jacksonville. The cost may be lower when you use a network dentist. You may have an annual deductible to meet before the plan starts to pay benefits. Once the insurance pays its part of the bill, you will receive a statement for your part.
3. Indemnity Plan
This is a traditional insurance plan. The insurance company pays a percentage of the charge for a service. You pay the remainder.
