4 Tips to Help You Get Used to Eating with Dentures

Are you missing several or all your teeth? if so, you may be thinking about getting dentures. They are a popular choice for about 15% of people who have lost all their teeth, offering a way to regain a full smile. However, adjusting to eating with dentures can be challenging at first. To help you get used to this new way of eating, here are four practical tips for a smoother transition.

Tip #1: Take It Slow

As you adjust to eating with dentures, begin by taking it slow. Try chewing evenly on both sides of your mouth and stick to soft foods. Here are some examples of soft foods that are gentle on your gums:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Smooth soups that won’t burn your mouth
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Applesauce and other pureed or cooked fruits and veggies
  • Smoothies, milkshakes, and juices
  • Cooked cereals like oatmeal and porridge
  • Gelatin, pudding, or low-fat yogurt

Tip #2: Practice Makes Perfect

After you’ve become comfortable with your dentures, gradually reintroduce firmer foods into your diet. Begin with small amounts and cut your food into bite-sized pieces that are easy to chew. Practice eating at home first to build confidence and avoid potential issues in public settings. Remember to chew evenly on both sides of your mouth and steer clear of very hot foods or those with sharp bones or shells.

Tip #3: Bite with Care

When eating, use your canines instead of your front teeth to bite into food. Biting with your front teeth can cause your dentures to shift, leading to sore gums.

Tip #4: Foods to Avoid

After you’ve fully adjusted to eating with your dentures, you should be able to handle most foods without trouble. However, some foods might still be challenging to chew, such as:

  • Crusty breads and crackers
  • Tough or stringy meats such as brisket
  • Fruits and vegetables, like apples, carrots, and corn on the cob
  • Crunchy peanut butter
  • Popcorn and whole nuts
  • Chewing gum and sticky candies
