A pair of dentures and denture adhesive.

Dentures are a natural-looking, effective way to replace missing teeth and help you eat a wider range of healthy foods. But sometimes they don’t stay in place as effectively as you’d like them to. If your dentures aren’t quite fitting like they should, here’s the proper way to use denture adhesive, and how to make sure you’ve thoroughly cleaned it off when you’re done.

Why Use Denture Adhesive?

Dentures shouldn’t necessarily need denture adhesive, especially if they’re new. Unfortunately, however, with age they can change shape, as can your mouth. This can in turn cause a less than proper fit. When that occurs, denture adhesive can help create a more secure bond until they can be repaired or replaced. Reasons you may want to try this product include:

  • Improperly fitting dentures due to bone shrinkage.
  • Added security for public speaking or performance engagements.
  • To keep food particles from getting caught between your dentures and your gums.

How To Use Denture Adhesive

Using denture adhesive is easy. Just follow these steps for a secure hold:

Denture Adhesive Cream

  • Clean your dentures thoroughly and dry them completely.
  • Apply your adhesive to the denture in short strips but be careful to avoid the edges. Do not apply too much, as it can ooze out from the gums and create a mess.
  • Rinse your mouth out.
  • Press your denture into place and hold it firmly for a few seconds before biting down to secure it.

Denture Adhesive Powder

  • Clean your dentures thoroughly but leave them wet.
  • Spray the denture powder very lightly and evenly on all surfaces that come in contact with your gums or the roof of your mouth.
  • Rinse your mouth.
  • Shake off any excess powder.
  • Put them in your mouth and press down firmly to secure them in place.

Denture Adhesive Strips

  • Thoroughly clean and dry your dentures.
  • Using clean, dry hands, remove your denture strips from the package.
  • Moisten one strip at a time with water.
  • Attach strips as shown in the directions, keeping them away from the denture’s edges. Be careful not to overlap the strips (you can tear or cut them to shape as needed).
  • Rinse your mouth with water.
  • Press your denture into place, holding it firmly. Then bite down.

Removing Denture Adhesive

To remove dentures with adhesive from your mouth, first swish around some warm water and gently pull your dentures out of your mouth. Place them somewhere safe and brush away the adhesive residue from your gums with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Next, it’s time to clean your dentures. Using a separate toothbrush, clean your dentures completely with non-abrasive toothpaste, including the areas without adhesive. Floss between each tooth, and then rinse well. If you are done wearing your dentures for the day, store them in a cup of water or denture soak.

Remember, your dentures shouldn’t need adhesive to stay in place in your mouth, however if they do, these steps will ensure that they’re attached properly and will stay secure until you’re ready to remove them. If you feel you need adhesive due to an improper fit, speak to your dentist today about a reline or a new pair that will help them stay in place so you can use them without the need for adhesives.
